Giovanni Battista Gaulli

Giovanni Battista Gaulli

  May 8, 1639
  2 April 1709
   •   Baroque , Rococo   •   Wikipedia: Giovanni Battista Gaulli

In the vibrant alleys of Genoa, where the shadows of the Renaissance lingered in the corners and the light of the Baroque flickered in the air, a star named Giovanni Battista Gaulli stepped onto the stage of life in 1639. Better known as Baciccio, he was to add a new dimension to the art world and push the boundaries of human imagination.

Baciccia grew up at a time when Genoa was a bubbling melting pot of cultural and artistic influences. Here, painters such as Rubens and van Dyck came together to put the finishing touches on their masterpieces. In this rich environment, Baciccia grew up soaking up the best of everyone. But tragically, his family was wiped out by the cruel plague of 1654. But the young Gaulli was undeterred and found inspiration in the work of artists like Valerio Castello and Bernardo Strozzi. While experimenting with colors and styles, he attracted the attention of art dealer Pellegrino Peri, who opened the door to the infinite world of Rome. It was in the Eternal City that Baciccio made the acquaintance of Gianlorenzo Bernini, whose influence on the young artist cannot be underestimated.

But it was Baciccio's incomparable gift of illusion that really set him apart. His stunning vaulted frescoes in the Gesù Church in Rome were the pinnacle of his art, with viewers believing they were gazing into the heavens. For lovers of art who have the privilege of owning such a masterpiece in the form of an art print, it is like having a piece of heaven brought into their four walls. In his later years, after a visit to Parma and inspired by Correggio's fascinating ceiling frescoes, Baciccio chose a painterly approach to his works, which captivated the viewer like soaring fireworks. Until the end of his life in 1709, he remained a pioneer whose work would stand the test of time, especially when presented in the form of an exquisite art print that lives on the legacy of this amazing artist.
