Ivan Ivanovich Shishkin

Ivan Ivanovich Shishkin is one of the most famous Russian landscape painters of the 19th century. His works capture the unique richness of detail of nature in all its facets. The moods of the different seasons are excellently transported thanks to the naturalistic choice of colors. The famous Russian painter was born in 1831. He discovered his passion for art early. From 1852 to 1856 he studied art at the School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture in Moscow. He later continued this study at the Imperial Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg. The landscape painter received an imperial scholarship and was thus financially independent. After his studies he spent three years in Düsseldorf, Geneva, Zurich and Munich. This time was marked by many impressions and an intensive artistic work. Back in St. Petersburg, he joined forces with a group of artists and founded the Wanderer movement. His professional career reached its peak with membership in the Academy of Arts and work as a professor.

After returning to his native country, Ivan Ivanovich Shishkin's works were part of numerous exhibitions. He was also represented with his works at the world exhibitions. A look at his art reveals the richness of detail in his landscape paintings. His works are based on analytical and realistic studies of nature. He achieved great fame with his forest landscapes. Shishkin is considered an outstanding painter, printmaker and draftsman of his era. He regularly spent time in his dacha in Vyra. His most beautiful works were created in this country house. Especially popular are the poetic depictions of landscapes at different seasons. The nature paintings present the wild nature with trees, grasses, animals, birds and agriculturally used areas like rye or wheat fields. The contrasting play of light and shadow is particularly impressive. In well-known works such as "A Walk in a Forest", "In a Birch Forest" or "Pine Tree", the artist takes the viewer into beautiful forest landscapes of his surroundings. Rays of sunlight penetrating through the canopy of leaves create a unique atmosphere. Shishkin considered the forest and the sky as fundamental elements of the universe, which he honored with his work. In 1898 the artist passed away. At that time he was working on his last painting entitled "A Grove of Pines". In honor of the artist, a minor planet discovered by astronomer Lyudmila Zhuravlyova in 1978 was named after him.

If you are interested in detailed, atmospheric and lifelike landscape paintings, you will love the works of Russian artist Ivan Ivanovich Shishkin. In the living rooms, the high-quality art prints create a unique atmosphere. The prints reproduce the beautiful details of the original works.
