   •   Plastic Art   •   Wikipedia: Luca Della Robbia

At the turn of the 15th century, in a city filled with vibrant creativity and an insatiable thirst for artistic renewal, a remarkable figure emerged on the scene: Luca della Robbia. Born in Florence and raised in a family of dyers, it was not colorful thread or woven fabric that caught Luca's attention, but the rough stone and soft clay that would form the heart of his craft. With humble beginnings in the workshop of Nanni di Banco, Luca received his training as a sculptor. Like a string detaching from a musical instrument to find its own melody, Luca was drawn to travel to Venice, where he immersed himself in the exquisite Venetian art and diverse crafts of the lagoon city. After the death of his master teacher, he joined the workshop of the legendary Donatello and made the acquaintance of Filippo Brunelleschi, where he learned the techniques of wax casting and goldsmithing.

Between decades working as a sculptor, Luca created notable works such as the organ pulpit for Florence Cathedral and the figures of the Seven Liberal Arts for the Campanile of Florence Cathedral. His works - carefully carved in stone and sculpted in clay - stood out for their artful combination of form and function, beauty and purpose. Toward the end of the second decade of his artistic career, however, Luca turned to a new art form: glazed ceramics. Like an alchemist creating gold from common metals, Luca developed a method for producing terracotta reliefs with luminous, almost jewel-like glazes. His works, typically characterized by blue backgrounds, white figures, and green and yellow ornamentation, appeared like jewels scattered throughout the rooms and gardens of Florence. Luca's transformation from a sculptor to a ceramic artist also marked the birth of the Della Robbia workshop. Under his leadership, this workshop became a thriving business, making artistic ceramic work known throughout Europe. Luca's nephew Andrea eventually took over the management of the business, and under his leadership the workshop continued to grow until it finally came to rest with the death of Andrea's third son Giovanni.

It is our mission to preserve and honor this legacy by producing exquisite fine art prints of Luca's work. At every step of the process, we strive to do justice to the extraordinary detail and masterful craftsmanship that distinguish Luca's works. It is our hope that these art prints will ignite the fire of enthusiasm for Luca's work and make his art accessible to a new generation of art lovers. Luca della Robbia leaves us a legacy deeply rooted in the fascinating world of glazed ceramics. His works are a tribute to the sublime beauty and technical brilliance that can be created in the hands of a true master. They are also witnesses to an irresistible artistic vision that has endured for centuries. In our collection of fine art prints, we honor that vision by capturing the vibrant, luminous quality of Lucas glazed ceramics and bringing them to life for you. In a world where everything is getting faster, more hurried, we invite you to pause for a moment and enjoy the beauty of Luca's work in our fine art prints. Immerse yourself in the fascinating world of Luca della Robbia - a master whose distinctive art continues to inspire and delight the world.
