With a birth certificate dated August 24, 1712, Michel-Barthélémy Ollivier was born into the vibrant cultural city of Marseille. As a French painter and engraver, he found his niche in creating historical scenes and genre scenes that captured the joie de vivre and cultural richness of his time. Ollivier's talents were not innate, but were nurtured in the family: His father Louis, grandfather Antoine, and cousin Cosme were also accomplished painters who passed on their skills and passion for art to Ollivier. Ollivier's artistic education was rich and varied. He began his studies at the Académie de Saint-Luc and continued them at the prestigious Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture. Under the guidance of Charles André van Loo, Ollivier continued to develop his skills. When van Loos' nephew, Louis Michel van Loo, was appointed court painter to King Philip V of Spain, Ollivier followed him to Madrid. After a period in Paris, he returned to Spain with his wife Faronne-Marie-Madeleine Lefebvre and remained there until 1763.
Upon his return to France in 1764, Ollivier was certified at the Académie de Saint-Luc as a genre painter and two years later was appointed an "Agré," a kind of candidate member, at the Académie Royale. His works found their way across the English Channel to England, where he exhibited at the newly founded Royal Academy in London in 1772. Among his many patrons was Louis François, Prince of Conti, for whom Ollivier worked as a "peintre ordinaire" (painter in waiting). Ollivier's masterpieces can be found in prestigious collections, including the Musée des beaux-arts de Bordeaux, the Louvre, and the Musée des beaux-arts de Valenciennes. However, while many of his works can be admired in these prestigious institutions, the whereabouts of many more remain unknown. Our art printing service strives to bring Ollivier's vibrant and captivating art to a wider audience. Each art print of Ollivier's work that we produce aims to reproduce the beauty and complexity of his original works to the highest standard, giving art lovers around the world the opportunity to appreciate his unique talent.
