   •   Landscape painting   •   Wikipedia: William Westall

In the crucible of art appeared an extraordinary painter, William Westall (1781-1850), a feathery figure who passed like a star across the British sky and achieved eternal fame as one of the first artists to capture the vastness of Australia. His name is closely associated with art prints that can be found in our collection, each an exquisite reproduction of his incomparable works. Born in the heart of England, in Hertford, Westall spent his formative years in London. He was born with a passion for painting. He grew up under the watchful eye of his stepbrother Richard Westall, a renowned painter and illustrator whose influence left a lasting mark on his life's journey. Westall ventured into the artistic world and took up a thorough artistic education at the prestigious Royal Academy, winning a silver palette award from the Society of Artists of Great Britain at the age of 16. This story forms the basis of each of his art prints, which we are proud to present today.

While still an apprentice, he began his extraordinary voyage, which took him from HMS Investigator across the endless expanses of the world's oceans, eventually docking in Australia. His voyage took him through Madeira and China to the rugged shores of Australia, whose pristine landscapes he captured with his artistic flair and breathed life into them on his canvases. His travels marked the beginning of his love for exotic landscape painting and served as inspiration for his unique art prints, which we reproduce with devotion today. After spending time in Madeira and China, Westall landed in Australia on December 6, a continent that was largely unexplored and unknown at the time. There he drew his first Australian coastal profile, a vision of Chatham Island, and other stunning views of the country. These pristine images of the Australian landscape, captured in Westall's youth, are the core of our fine art print offerings.

Even after his adventures and discoveries in Australia, Westall continued his travels, traversing India and Madeira before eventually returning to England. Upon his return home, he used the impressions he gained and produced a series of oil paintings based on his travels. These paintings formed the basis for our fine art prints and are key to Westall's enduring legacy in the art world. William Westall's life, marked by travel and discovery, is evident in each of his works and in each art print we offer. We proudly present the fine art prints of William Westall, who mastered the unknown and captured nature in a way no one had seen before him. His breathtaking views of distant lands and exotic landscapes offer us an unparalleled glimpse into the world of the 19th century and are a testament to his tireless curiosity and artistic talent. His works are more than just art - they are windows into another time and another land, and we are proud to open those windows for you through our William Westall art prints.
