Art of the 20th century

The artists of the 20th century worked very individually in their own studios. Pablo Picasso ("Les Demoiselles") described modern art not as "searching" for something, but as "finding" without preconditions in connection with relentless openness with an experimental character in the creative process. There is no better way to describe 20th century art.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the expressionist style of art develops. Works by Franz Marc ("The Tower of Blue Horses"), Henri Matisse ("The Dance") or Max Beckmann ("Self-Portrait with Horn") made Expressionism respectable. Pablo Picasso ("Guernica") and Georges Braque ("Violin and Palette") were the inventors of Cubism, taking motifs apart and rearranging them. Surrealism, an art movement of dreams and urges, belongs to the 20th century. Joan Miro ("Étoile Bleue") or Salvador Dali ("Girl at the Window") are its most famous artists.

Pop art incorporates motifs such as street signs or beer cans. They were the answer to the abstract paintings of expressionism. It was followed in the 70s by artists who gave life to neo-expressionism. Georg Baselitz and Jörg Immendorf represent this direction. At the end of the 20th century, Postmodernism developed, which saw Modernist art as automated and too established. Impressive works by Martin Kippenberger or Jeff Koons are exemplary.
