Asian Art

Under Asian art, the art styles of different cultures of Asia are summarized. Examples include Chinese, Indian and Islamic art. An important component of Chinese art is porcelain work, which reached its peak in the Ming period (1368 - 1644). Ming vases in the blue and white style with floral-ornamental motifs or depictions of animals are particularly well known in Europe. Painting and calligraphy, practiced by scholar and official elites, are other important elements. Fine brushstrokes show the connection between ink painting and calligraphy. A well-known example of this art is the 16th century painting "Spring Morning in the Imperial Palace" by Qui Ying.

Indian art is strongly influenced by the religious philosophical spirit from Hinduism and Buddhism. The central aesthetic aspect is "Rasa", a state of joy and fulfillment, not to be expressed literally, which is aroused when viewing art. Large sections of art, such as theatre, music, visual arts and Indian cinema are geared towards this state. Very popular are the "Rangoli" (sand paintings), for which fine colored powder is arranged - mostly outdoors - to form pictures.

Islamic art covers a period of about 1400 years and yet the design, pattern formation and techniques have always remained similar. Characteristic is the general tendency towards figureless representation in all fields of art, which mainly include architecture, calligraphy, painting, ceramics and textile works.
