The painting is a multi-layered reflection of the well-known Lord's Prayer request: give us our daily bread today. Nature is friendly with the golden stalks on the left side of the picture and the glowing grass underneath. In the background, a woman bending while sheaf cutting, a man with a proud cylinder next to it; a little further a peaceful rest. The picture could be idyllic, if it were not for the older, worked-out woman in the foreground in heavy, peasant clothes. The fallen bucket in the ditch reinforces the impression of a thoughtful, melancholy expression. She turns away from the fire and the pot hung over it, as if she were too tired to care any longer for life. The path that leads along the cornfield in front of her is like a stretched question mark. Does God give the bread? Is the creation friendly, or is it only the daily toil, through which the indispensable nature of life is won over to life? An impressionistic interpretation of the Swedish painter Zorn, which is thought-provoking.
