Heavy clouds hang like rolls over a stony dark coast. At the top in the middle, they are a bit relaxed, so that the greenish shimmering light of the recognizable moon illuminates a narrow strip of nocturnal water. Between the stones on the shore, barely recognizable, two small boats are moored. Everything seems to be asleep, but there must be movement on the sea: A short distance from the shore, but already near the shore, there are two sailing ships with their sails sailing back to the land. A third ship is still far away.
Caspar David Friedrich's painting "Sea Shore in Moonlight" is a classic romantic painting. The painter has created an impressive atmosphere in browns, blues and greens, which captivates the viewer. The composition is well thought out: the moon illuminates exactly the water surface between the two ships close to land, the light leads the view between them through a gate and far out to the sea. Because the view first perceives this part, the viewer discovers the small boats on land and the third sailing ship late. This corresponds exactly to Friedrich's painting technique: His pictures can not be captured with one glance, a closer look is always necessary. As is so often the case in Friedrich's paintings, this picture also shows a perfect but almost inviolable nature. From man and everything man made, in this case the boats and ships, only indistinct shadows are to be seen. But it also has a religious background. The painting is probably Friedrich's last picture before he died. He painted it after his stroke, though he was barely able to guide the brush. Maybe it was meant as a farewell image: it can be seen as arriving in the harbor after driving through life. storm · stormy · cloud · clouds · cloudy · ship · boat · sail · sailing · romanticist · moon · rocky · fishing · seascape · nocturne · Hamburger Kunsthalle, Hamburg, Germany / Bridgeman Images |
