The moving air of the winter tree is only partly recognizable in the picture by Egon Schiele (1890-1918). The painting from 1912 also does not necessarily show a tree; If the image title were not available, the viewer would hardly be able to clearly identify the displayed image content.

Although the picture in the true sense has no depth effect, there is a foreground, middle and background. The foreground is an irregularly shaped light brown stripe, followed by a narrow mountain silhouette in dark brown to black colors; most of the image is made up of the background in a shade of gray that alternates between rather light and rather dark parts.
From the brown earthy stripe, clearly to the left of the center of the almost square picture, the trunk of the tree in question grows up just below the center of the picture. The trunk is crowned, which has initially grown to the right, then strives straight upwards, and then, finally, to lean back clearly to the right, from an indicated treetop, which the artist has almost depicted as a curved whip.

Looking only at this part of the picture, it dissolves almost completely from every form of objectivity. Only the narrow earth-colored band on the lower edge of the picture as well as the following also narrow mountain silhouette make the idea that a tree is represented here appear conclusive.
The painting is absolutely harmonious and harmonious in its design. The renunciation of almost every claim to a realistic representation leads to a dynamic representation of this autumn tree in moving air. Particularly impressive are the delicate lines that are intended to represent small branches, but at the same time look like an appealing pattern. Here Schiele is only a small step away from pure abstraction.
