Born in Vienna in 1793, Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller has created important genre works by Biedermeier. His work "Grandmother with three grandchildren" gives the view, even the participation, in a simple farmhouse parlor. Thanks to the exuberant mood between grandma and grandchildren and the cheerful color of skirts and jackets, the atmosphere is not depressed, although the interior is simple and rustic. Cleverly the artist steers the light onto the radiant white skirt of the old woman, who seems to be reading a letter to her grandchildren. The three children are in casual attitudes about their grandmother and are full of their senses. They laugh, touch each other, point to the paper Grandmother holds in her hands reddened from work. Here everything is authentic: the simple but orderly and clean room, being together in the family, to the relaxed attitude of the grandmother.
