"The Kiss" by Gustav Klimt is one of the most famous paintings of the art epoch of Art Nouveau. The painting of this period is characterized by small floral ornaments, stretched, filigree and delicate depictions of people as well as decorative patterns. In his masterpiece "The Kiss" Klimt expresses his preference for femininity and the sensual. It is assumed that the lovers are the artist and his mistress. The golden sheathing is supposed to stand for the unbridled passion and bond between the two lovers. These golden finishes are among Klimt's typical painterly features. They also include the ornamental transformation of bodies and objects into two-dimensional symbols. This kind of abstraction paved the way for subsequent art epochs such as Cubism and Surrealism.
