"Nude Woman with a Dog" by Gustave Courbet is a painting that belongs to realism. The woman and the dog are shown photo-realistic. Due to the color scheme and the unusual motif choice, the work is very avant-garde. This is hardly surprising, because Courbet is one of the pioneers of realism for painters in France, Germany and other countries. The painting was created between 1861 and 1862 and is a metaphor for the affection and sensual love that a woman feels towards her lover. This becomes clear, for example, from the attitude of the model, which leans towards the dog like a kiss.
The special feature of his depictions is not so much an aestheticization of nudity, but rather an unvarnished and clear presentation that puts the figures in the foreground and exposes them to the gaze of the image viewer. The naked woman and her dog are in the center of the picture and take it at least two-thirds. The eyes of the two figures face each other. In the background is a landscape depicting a lake with a wooded shore. The woman sits leaning against a rock, while in the foreground a moss-covered ground can be seen. Courbet always works with a very fine color gamut, so that the nude representations never appear pornographic, but artistic. This is also the case with this painting. In fine amber tones both the figures and the landscape are kept in the background. Since there are many dark shadows in the picture, the scene at the lake seems to be playing in the evening. The woman seems to recover from a swim in the lake and to deal with her dog, who has been waiting for her on the shore. Such everyday scenes - paired with a nude representation - are typical of the time of classic realism - and the style of the painter Courbet. Again and again, the image of fine white is broken, which is reflected in the clouds, the foam of the waves and in the fur of the dog. But even the skin of the naked woman shimmers whitish. naked · feeling · friendship · closeness · affection · adorable · kind · partnership · cooperative · understanding
