Renowned for his naïve paintings, French painter Henri Rousseau is considered a pioneer of surrealism. The painting "The Dream" seems to confirm this. We see a jungle landscape with wild animals, colorful birds, climbing monkeys, palm trees and trees with orange fruits. As in paradise everyone lives here next to everyone, the idyllic scenery is bathed by the round moon in whitish light. In the middle of the picture, a black, standing figure with a colorful striped skirt plays peacefully on a wind instrument. However, the main focus is on the naked woman, who is lying on a red velvet sofa and points with her arm and hand towards the flowers, player and animals. Is she the dreaming? Is the viewer moving through her dream world? The painting exudes a cheerful serenity. Everything exists peacefully next to the other: beautiful colorful flowers seem to weigh their heads in perfect harmony with the musician's tunes.
