For a long time, the address of the painter Johann Christian Dahl was on Elbe 33. From here he kept capturing the flair of the Elbe metropolis. It was pure love that connected the painter to Dresden. Dahl regularly captured the silhouette of the city, sometimes from the right, sometimes from the left side of the bank of the Elbe. The characteristic towers and domes that shaped the city in the early 19th century have been carefully carved out. The scenery of the city in the moonlight is captured from the left side of the Elbe. The moon is an important symbol in romantic painting. The full moon stands over Dresden and is covered by light clouds. Its light is reflected in the Elbe and gives a group of riders the light they need to refresh the horses. The quiet scenery of the city is complemented by a lively hustle and bustle on the Elbe beach and lifts the painting out of the circle of romantic painting.Dahl was a realist, he observed, took in the lively hustle and bustle of Dresden and built it into his works. Burning torches and the glow behind the windows bring a second color of light into the night scene. The glistening moonlight is complemented by the warm glow of candles and lanterns. To this day, the baroque panorama of the city can be rediscovered from the Neustadt side, not least thanks to the realistic rendering by the Norwegian artist Dahl.
