Born in Nantes in 1828, Frenchman Jules-Élie Delaunay is a realistic artist not only known for his realistic but also for mythological subjects. The "Flute Lesson" shows two naked little boys in front of a southern landscape with sea and steep mountains. The older boy casually sits on a boulder, over his shoulder he has thrown a large green cloth in an antique style. This boy looks at a boy next to him who is facing the viewer and tries to play a melody on two recorders at the same time. The sitter seems too young for a teacher, yet it is clear from gestures and facial expressions at first glance that he explains something to the younger. At the feet of the two is a sleeping dog in the shadow of the foreground in the shade: no unimportant detail, because the dog emphasizes the relaxed atmosphere in the open air under a bright sky.
