Born in Tbilisi in 1862, Niko Pirosmani is a naive painter. Oxen, fields and vineyards coined him as a child before the death of his father, who was a farmer. Later, when his mother was at the service of royalty, Pirosmani taught himself to paint. In a simple, touching way, the artist presents the animal in its role as farm animal with "White cow on a black background". A trough filled with milk indicates that the cow has just been milked. The powerful, peaceful animal can be seen from the side, on his body lies a glow that almost brings the cow into myth. Especially the contrast of illuminated, white cow and dark background allows the representation of the cow as an important companion of humans. The cow plays the main role here: this is underpinned by shadows of her hooves and legs on the stable floor.
