The native Norwegian found his adoptive home in northern Denmark. He was one of the Skagen painters, a colony of Scandinavian artists in the fishing village of Skagen on the northernmost tip of Denmark. His nature views from the beach are numerous. He likes to paint people who are there, where land and sea meet. When looking at those motifs, it becomes clear that he has chosen a regular place, because almost all the pictures show the shores in the same angle. Here are two boys talking to each other. One stands in knee-deep water, the other sits with his things too close to the water. Maybe the tide is coming and he's been sitting there ever since it was dry there. On the horizon, two sailboats can be seen and almost halfway there is another person in nabeltiefem water facing those boats. Noteworthy is the lighting in this picture. The full moon faces the viewer in the cloudless sky, but the children are illuminated by a strong light source to the right behind the spectator; even in the tracks in the sand this illumination can be seen.
