The Danish-Norwegian painter Peder Severin Krøyer was one of the most prominent representatives of the so-called artists' colony Skagen. The group of Swedish, Norwegian and Danish artists had their heyday at the end of the 19th century in the Danish fishing village of Skagen. Artistically inspired by the Impressionists, the painters turned away from the academic style of painting to devote themselves to a formally unattached open-air painting. Like the role models from France, they too relied on the effect of light and color, on mood and above all on the visualization of the stroke of the brush. Krøyer's 1883 painting "Roses or the artist's wife in the garden of Skagen" is a typical representative of the Skagen colony. On the left side of the atmospheric picture you can see a white-dressed woman reading a newspaper in a garden - resting on a couch. The title explains who it is: It is the wife of the artist, Marie. In the foreground a tree can be seen, whose branches and flowers frame the reader. In this way Krøyer cleverly directs the eye of the beholder to the essentials. In the background behind the blossom tree is a white house with reddish shimmering roof tiles. The painting style is loose, the accent of the execution is on the brush and the color. Typical of Krøyer is the carefree calm he achieves through color, composition and the play of light and shadow.
