Long before the legend of Andromeda in "The Battle of the Titans" was brought to life quite true to the original, Piero di Cosimo immortalized him in this painting. The myth: Cassiopeia, the wife of Kepheus and Queen of Ethiopia, had claimed that her daughter Andromeda was more beautiful than the Nereids. This enraged Poseidon so much that he sent a flood that would devastate the land if Andromeda was not sacrificed to the sea monster Ketos. As Andromeda was already chained to a rock jutting out of the sea, the hero Perseus hurried to help Pegasus and killed the monster. In some versions of the myth, he also holds out to Ketos the severed head of the Gorgon Medusa, which turns the monster into stone. After defeating Ketos, Perseus married Andromeda.
