Pierre-Auguste Renoir's painting "Bal de moulin de la Galette" is probably one of the best and artistically outstanding examples of Post-Impressionism. Renoir uses an impressionistic manner of painting with a picture motif that is far too elaborate to actually be painted by the artist within a few minutes as a fleeting snapshot. He uses optical color mixing, focuses on the play of light and shadow and paints the subject in the appearance color. At the same time, despite the coarse painting style, he works with great detail and combines many small individual scenes into a large-scale composition. Thus, the picture seems alive and fleeting, although it - unlike Impressionist paintings - was created in a studio, but specifically in Montmartre near the eponymous mill (French: "moulin") was rented.
