"The Dutch Proverbs" is a painting by the artist Pieter Bruegel the Elder and is also called "The Flemish Proverbs". He was inspired by the picture "The Garden of Earthly Delights" because the picture is similarly detailed. The work contains over 100 Dutch sayings and idioms, which is due to the fact that collections of proverbs were common in Bruegel's time. However, many of these proverbs are still used today and are also known in German-speaking countries. “Upside down world”, “The cubes have fallen” and “Head through the wall” are some examples.
