Rembrandt is considered the master of light. Fantastic is how the artist portrays himself in his self-portrait. Resting in himself, sitting on a chair in a lateral position and looking directly at the observer, we meet a master who is sure of himself. The wrinkled face shows traces of age, whereas the thick, curly hair on both sides of the artist's cap indicates vitality. Like a spotlight, the painter's face is illuminated. As a result, the expression is extremely lively, almost physical. Except for the hands, which the master brighter, but only hinted at in lighter shades lying in the lap, the entire figure is held in shades of brown. Only at second glance does one recognize on the cap, hair, shoulder and scarf light-brightened areas. The powerful left shoulder is also masterfully designed: it almost haptically stands out from the dark background.
