The Italian painter Piero della Francesca is considered the master of the early Renaissance and one of the most important painters of the 15th century. Many other artists took an example from him and his mostly religious works. At the same time Piero was a mathematician and art theorist. His exact date of birth is not known, as his birth certificate was burned in an archive. It is estimated to be 1412 or 1420. During his life Piero della Francesca worked in Florence, Rome and Ferrara, but mainly in his hometown Sansepolcro in the northeast of Tuscany.
That Piero della Francesca was a mathematician was also reflected in his works. Proportions and body volumes were calculated precisely, the pictures seem very spatial and there is a serene calm and silence. Just likeLeonardo da Vinci, who was born two generations after him, Piero enjoyed experimenting with many painting techniques. For example, he replaced pigments and water with oil paints when painting frescoes. Piero received his first training as a painter in Florence, where he is said to have spent much of his youth. One of his first works was the "Baptism of Christ", which is now exhibited in London (National Gallery).
The last known work by him dates from 1478, after which he devoted himself to writing books on art theory. Tragically, he is said to have been blind for the last years of his life. He remained faithful to his birthplace Sansepolcro in the Tuscan province of Arezzo until the end of his life in 1492. For art lovers and hikers there is the Sansepolcro and Piero della Francesca Trail, which also leads to Piero's greatest work, the "Resurrection". This fresco was painted in 1463 and was called the best painting in the world by the British writer Aldous Huxley.
