Mythical creatures are creatures from fantasy, from fairy tales, mythologies and legends. But some of them also have their origins in the real world. For example, mammoth bones may once have been mistaken for the bones of giants. There are even regional mythical creatures that later turned out to be real. There are both positive, helping mythical creatures and destructive, dangerous ones. Often they served to personify danger and to educate children. Such as the Scottish kelpie, said to lurk in the water to drown those too close. Famously, fear of wolves and bats created vampires and werewolves. In earlier times, nobles collected natural objects that supposedly belonged to mythical creatures, such as the horn of a unicorn. This belief seems backward to us today, but modern mythical creatures exist in our time as well. Among the most famous representatives are the sea monster Nessie, the Yeti or the Chupacabra.

The painter Arnold Böcklin was particularly fascinated by mythical creatures. "Triton and Nereid" and "The Hunt of Diana" are just two of his countless colorful works on the subject. For him, mythical creatures stood for harmony with nature. He painted Pan, a horned, flute-playing nature deity, particularly often. The artist Paul Peter Rubens, one of the most famous baroque painters, created his work "Two Satyrs". And also the impressionist Edvard Munch, known for his famous painting "The Scream" created portraits of mermaids. The fascination with the creatures of our imagination stretches from the past to modern times.
