Romanticism

The epoch of Romanticism began at the end of the 18th century and ran through all artistic areas of the time. Its name is derived from the Latin term "lingua romana", which stands for "Romance language". This refers to texts that were not written in Latin - as had previously been customary - but in languages such as French, Spanish or Italian. Accordingly, the term Romanticism originally referred to literature, but soon spread to painting as well. One of the most important motifs of the era was the subconscious, which the artists of the time tried to transfer into their works. In addition, Romanticism revisited the ideals of the Middle Ages as well as motifs such as love, but also the uncanny.

One of the most important painters of the Romantic period was Caspar David Friedrich, who linked landscape and religious images, which were very widespread in his time, with themes such as death, loneliness and the afterlife. One of his most important paintings was "The Wanderer over the Sea of Fog" from 1818. The painter Philipp Otto Runge was also active at the same time as Friedrich, and the work of both artists later influenced the painting natural philosopher Carl Gustav Carus.

Romanticism in painting reached its conclusion towards the end of the 19th century.
