Saudade is a Portuguese word that is untranslatable. It stands for the longing for something you loved very much and lost forever and the knowledge that you will never get over it again. The word comes from the Latin "solutudo", which means loneliness. Saudade, however, includes much more. In the painting Saudade by Almeida Júnior, you see a woman having this feeling. She is holding a photograph in her hand, obviously of something she has lost, perhaps a deceased loved one. She is dressed in black to express her grief and holds a scarf in front of her mouth, showing that she wants to be alone right now. Although her face is half covered, you can see the deep sadness in her eyes.
