It is said that Victor Hugo is for the novel, what Shakespeare is for the drama. Undoubtedly, he is one of the most important writers in history and one of the most fascinating personalities France has ever produced. The fact that he was above all a convinced humanist is shown not only in his works, but also in the fact that he was always politically attached to the group from which he hoped for the best for the population at the time. "Notre Dame de Paris" (German title: "The Hunchback of Notre-Dame") is after the epic "Les Misérables" (German title: "The Elves") his most significant work. The painting shows Hugo writing, while his ideas come to life in the background: Esmeralda, who has Quasimodo in the pillory to help and the eponymous cathedral.
