Cultural Circles

Outside of Western art, the culturally foreign, creatively represented or manufactured has always been a fascinating subject. Not only did it offer insights into unknown worlds, but it was also a source of inspiration for Western artists. Conversely, original products of foreign artistic traditions also incorporated Western aspects over time. Spiritual and artistic expressions go together in most of the traditional cultural products of foreign countries and ancient times. Mythological world views shape them just as much as social regulations and specific values. Plastic products, for example African masks, are also objects of use for rituals, and protective functions were attributed to the elaborate ancient Egyptian amulets. Pictorial representations are as individual as the cultures themselves. However, particular thematic premises and modes of expression are always apparent in them. In Japanese illustrations, for example, views of nature play a major role; empty spaces on the picture surface are deliberately set against concentrations of figures or things. The calligraphy of the Orient bears witness to the prohibition of images in Islam; it thus developed as an art form with independent pictorial content. In a reversal of the effect of Western culture on foreign artistic traditions, Western artists also drew attention to distant societies in their own works. Many brought back impressions from their travels as paintings and drawings or incorporated them into their depictions. The Post-Impressionist Paul Gauguin, for example, painted scenarios in echoes of Polynesian culture and nature. On the whole, however, such illustrative information cannot be considered documentary. It was not until the advent of photography in the early 19th century that authentic images of exotic cultural products emerged.
