Of the three paintings made by Luca Giordano on the abduction of the most beautiful woman of antiquity, this is probably the best known and most dynamic. Helena had many suitors who had sworn to accept her choice of a husband. Helena chose Menelaus, king of Sparta. But then she met the Prince of Princes of Paris and fell in love with him on the promise of Aphrodite and fled with him to Troy. This is how the Trojan War was triggered. Noteworthy about Giordano's painting is that Helena struggles as she is dragged into a boat with dead soldiers in the background, suggesting that the scenery shown is not the robbery of Paris, but the deportation of Helena back to Sparta Menelaus shows.
