The ancient myth about the imprisoned, only for a divine rain reachable princess Danaë inspired over the centuries many artists to erotic paintings. So too the Austrian painter Gustav Klimt, who presented his Danaë in 1907. Legend has it that beautiful Danaë was the daughter of Akrisios, king of the city of Argos, who was prophesied to die by the hand of his grandson. Therefore, he locked his only childless daughter Danaë out of reach of a tower. The god father Zeus, however, coveted Danae so much that he came over them in the form of a golden rain and sired with her the hero Perseus. In fact, Perseus later accidentally killed his grandfather with a discus. Klimt's artwork shows the viewer the sensual act between Danaë and the golden rain that falls between her legs. A strange-looking detail is the black, elongated square near Danae's shame, which could symbolize a penis.
