Images that illustrate texts are as old as the written word. Even cave paintings were basically picture stories and illustrated a narrative without any written text at all. In ancient Egypt, texts were usually richly illustrated, as can still be seen in temples or tombs and on papyri. Otherwise, however, illustrations were rather the exception in antiquity.
Book illustration experienced a real heyday only in the Middle Ages. Before the invention of printing, books were copied by hand, and also illustrated by hand in the form of miniature paintings. With the invention of printing, woodcuts were used in analogy to printing plates and later movable type. These printed illustrations were sometimes coloured by hand. Like letterpress printing, illustration gained enormous importance, especially during the Reformation, and played a key role in the struggle between Protestants and the Roman Catholic Church over the mostly illiterate faithful. Later printing options for illustrations form, in chronological order: copperplate engraving, xylography and lithography.

With the advent of photography, painted or drawn illustration, like all forms of art that serve purely to depict, became less important. However, illustrations are still strongly represented, especially in scientific works, because they can reproduce people, animals, plants, constructions or geological structures in a much more exemplary and vivid way than photographs. An anatomical cross-section, for example, would never be possible with photographs in the form it is as a drawn illustration. Even in fictional literature - especially in children's and young adult books - printed illustrations, previously painted by hand, can still be found today.
