Claude Monet painted over 80 pictures of the coastal town of Étretat during his numerous stays there. Even for Monet, the picture is unusually coarse, with even a distance still clearly recognizable duct painted. Unlike paintings, where the focus is on the Porte d'Aval, the Manneporte or the Falaise d'Amont (the three rock gates on the Etretat coast) itself, there is also a far less patient motif model, which is why the rock formation is well only roughly worked out. The main focus of this painting is on the turbulent seas and the play of surfing waves observed by a small group of people standing on the shore. One of the characteristic rock formations of the Étretat cliff, the Porte d'Aval, can be seen on the left in the background.
